Painting Kitchen Cabinets With Chalk Paint

I am in love with my kitchen renovation and chalk paint!! I cannot wait to use it again on my kitchen table, bathroom vanity, living room, etc. Chalk paint is wonderful…no need to sand or prime (although I did use 1 coat of Kilz – more on that in the steps below).

  1. Clean all cabinets and doors with Krud Kutter to remove grease/dirt.
  2. Label doors and remove. (I labeled using an item within each cabinet. For example, I wrote “jello” on the tape stuck to the door that contained jello boxes.)
  3. Paint a coat of Kilz on all cabinets and doors to prevent wood stain from coming through paint.  (I did not do this at first and had to go back and do it after two coats of chalk paint were already applied.) Let dry.
  4. Apply 2-3 coats of chalk paint.
  5. Using sanding sponge, distress cabinets/doors. (I sanded the outlines on the doors and a few spots on the cabinets/doors. See gallery below.)
  6. After all dust is brushed off, apply at least one coat of Polycrylic. (The can labels it as poleurethane. It is important to use this specific crystal clear finish so that you do not receive a yellow tint!) Do not skip the Varathane – it prevents the chalk paint from chipping.
  7. Reassemble doors and hardware.

It took me about a week, working about 2-3 hours each day. In total, I used 4 cans of chalk paint and half of a can of the polycrylic. I also used all three of the sanding sponges. I could not be happier with the end result! It is a lot of work but totally worth it!
